In the year of 1208 A.D.(KAMAKURA period), the Emperor GOTOBA granted permission to NORIMUNE, one of the great swordsmiths, to engrave the imperial chrysanthemum (KIKU in Japanese) crest on swords he forged, which was undoubtedly honorable. Also, he engraved 一(the number 1 in Japanese) below the crest. The name of this sword KIKUICHIMONJI comes from this event. Kiku means chrysanthemum and ICHIMONJI mean the number 1 in Japanese.
It is said that this sword belonged to SOZI OKITA, who was the highest samurai in Shinsengumi.
Shinsengumi worked for Tokugawa government to combat against anti-government clans at the end of Edo period(1853-1868 A.D.). He was also participating in the civil war called “戊辰戦争(BOSHIN war) as one of its leading members, fighting for the Tokugawa government.
